Mad Money

By Max Allan Collins
Mad Money by Max Allan Collins digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

Nolan must rob every store in a mall in one night – or his girlfriend dies. Two Nolan novels from Grandmaster Max Allan Collins, collected in one volume for the first time.

Nolan and Jon have put their lives of crime behind them – but when a cruel adversary from their past resurfaces, they’re forced back into the heist game with a brutal ultimatum: pull off an insanely ambitious overnight robbery or Nolan’s kidnapped lover won’t live to see the morning.

Appearing in bookstores for the first time in 35 years, this is Nolan’s biggest and deadliest job – and Mad Money also features, for the first time ever in the same volume, the bonus full-length novel Mourn the Living, offering a look back at Nolan’s early years as a professional thief.

Rolling on the Floor Laughing Face“This is actually a bind up of two Nolan books, namely Spree and Mourn the Living, the last book in the series until recently and the very first, which had gone unpublished until this collection. That explanation out of the way, let me just say that both these books are pure, unadulterated male power fantasies. Nolan is a middle-aged former mobster with just enough personality to keep things going while allowing the reader to insert themselves into his otherwise laconic, empty shell where they can live out the fantasy of both men and women wanting a piece of him (though usually different pieces) and Nolan dominating both. I didn’t care much for Spree. It’s a heist book, but given the brevity of the pulp format, it doesn’t go deep into the nitty gritty details of the heist, nor does it really feel there’s much at stake in the actual heist. The target is a shopping mall, which was definitely relevant to the 1980s setting, but less so now. As such it left a lot to be desired. Mourn the Living, on the other hand, was much more fun. It casts Nolan into the role of detective to pay a debt to an old associate by looking into the death of his daughter. The premise kind of turns the whole concept of pulp detective stories on its head and I enjoyed that a lot even if the mystery itself gets a bit lost in the details along the way. And as is typical of pulp fiction, both end in explosive violence.”
“Another excellent set of entries in the Nolan series. There haven't been any bad books in the series yet. I have one left, unless Mr Collins decides to give us more.”
