Donald MacBeth, a Scottish twenty something, is trying to break out from a twenty-year stretch in the Highland rural family crime business. He arrives in the city to establish a career to support Angela, the love of his life.
He falls foul of the VAT squad, amongst others, and whilst on the run, falls in with an Italian CIA informant also dodging pursuit, but from the Mafia. Donald heads home where he should feel safe, but that is where his pursuers expect him to be. Events conspire as he tries to propose, keep people alive, say hello to his folks, and find a job on the right side of the law.
