“Book two of the north and south trilogy covers pretty much the entire civil war focusing once again on the Main (the south) and the Hazzard (the north families)
This was an Audiobook and while the narrator does the story justice he does not do much for the voices. (Just a side note)
I found some characters had too much plot armour and others did not have enough. I was angry for a couple of days with what happened - realistic but ..
What I do like about the series is it realistic ways it describes ordinary people in an extraordinary time and goes to different places than just the battlefield.
(Libby prison, the south’s naval yards in Liverpool, the average scout and administrative life)
It also does not shy away from the attitudes on both sides including the one that America was too good for the freed slave and the attitude of manipulating the freed slave to vote for one party
The complaints I felt is was longer than it needed to be ( it could trim about 100 pages maybe some more) as we get introduced to temporary characters to explore the free for all that happened in the south at the end of the war.
The series is worth time if you want to look at familiar events with the eyes of an average person
