Look Before You Leap

By Virginia Heath
Look Before You Leap by Virginia Heath digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

In this hilarious second installment of a Regency romance series, a single lord is forced to settle down...and when a houseparty brings a happy-go-lucky lady's companion his way, his grumpy heart is unexpectedly warmed.

Nine years ago, Lord Guy Harrowby, Viscount Wennington, was publicly humiliated by a failed and reckless romantic gesture. Despite this, his mother clings to the promise he made her then: that she would have a house full of grandchildren by his thirtieth birthday. Still single, embittered, and swiftly approaching thirty, Guy's work is his life. In desperation, his mother blindsides Guy with a weeklong house party at his estate filled with annoying debutantes, all competing to be his wife.

After failing as a governess, Lottie Travers is struggling as a lady’s companion. Raised in an all-male household, she’s developed habits that get her dismissed. Even after years of Miss Prentice’s teachings of how to be a lady, she climbs trees better than she embroiders and can’t resist riding horses astride, in breeches. But with the family farm in trouble, and her father now in dire need of her wages, she’s determined to conquer her wildness once and for all.

Even with his home full of eligible women, there is only one who catches Guy’s eye—though he tries to deny it. For Lottie, succeeding in her new role proves difficult when the Wennington estate is filled with horses, and a spark ignites between her and the grumpy lord. Will they remain stuck in their ways, or learn that they may just be the perfect match?

“The story was pretty solid throughout, until the end. I have mixed feelings about the end, because from his perspective, I LOVED IT! The way he told off his mother and aunt, even the ladies that were meddling. He was bouncing off the walls and so angry at everyone. He didn’t spare a single person in his tirade and I loved that. He was so besotted, he was seeing red. He could only think of Lottie. I just wish he was able to catch her carriage or something, before she really left, that would have been the perfect ending. But from her perspective, I hated the end. For some reason, she took him saying they’ll discuss “this” as them not talking about the future. Such a stupid addition. Because what do you mean he’ll all over you, and can’t have enough, and you just had sex, and he doesn’t want to leave you, and he says you guys will talk about this later, and what do you mean you misunderstood his meaning. You thought there was no future? Like how stupid are you? And then she was stringing him along at the restaurant, knowing he doesn’t like public spectacles. But she found it funny how he was falling all over himself. She could have stopped the whole embarrassing encounter if she had just said, don’t call the police, he’s with me, but no, she let it all happen. So weird. And I was having a pretty solid time before that. I even LOVED when he was telling off his family. I thought we’d have a grand ending… but no. A let down. I feel like we didn’t even get a close on her family’s farm. Only giving this 3 stars for him telling off his mom, aunt, and the ladies that meddled.”

About Virginia Heath

When Virginia Heath was a little girl, it took her ages to fall asleep, so she made up stories in her head to help pass the time while she was staring at the ceiling. As she got older, the stories became more complicated, sometimes taking weeks to get to the happy ending. Then one day, she decided to embrace the insomnia and start writing them down. Now her Regency rom-coms (including the Wild Warriners and Merriwell Sisters series) are published in many languages across the globe. Thirty-two books and four Romantic Novel of the Year Award nominations later, it still takes her forever to fall asleep.
