Lizards Hold the Sun
By Dani TrujilloPublisher Description
Archaeology has historically been a field for white men only.
Not anymore. Xiomara Chavez has dedicated her life to the preservation of her Mexican homeland. Out of hundreds of applications, she alone was selected to lead the creation of the Bunchberry Tribal Museum. Faced with her most remote project ever, Xiomara must rely on the help of Calehan, the aloof museum architect. Sparks fly in the archives as Xiomara struggles to refrain from dating in the workplace.
Tight-lipped Calehan Yellowbird has been tethered to Bunchberry, Canada for a thousand years. After the loss of his mother as a teen, Calehan has been providing for his family more than half his life. While he earned his architecture degree nearly a decade ago, the Bunchberry Museum would be his first official project. The pressure was immense, and Calehan felt the pressure of this project being his first…and last. Romance and dreams weren’t in the cards for someone like him. For Xiomara though, he was willing to take the chance.
Thrown among ancient artifacts, shooting stars, and cultural obligations, Calehan and Xiomara must decide if they belong to each other or if the responsibility to their tribes and families are where they must be.

“Very charming book that I enjoyed reading. Some parts of book dragged on a bit, but that did not get me off stride from reading it. Look forward to reading more books from author.”

“I did like the fluff and getting to know all the characters though it is a bit too slow-paced and dragged on at times. I LOVE whenever the book goes into a bit more detail about Xiomara's archeology work and also Calehan's big and loving family. There was a little snippet at the end of the book that I'm sure is the beginning of another one featuring another member of the Yellowbird and I'd love to read more of that.”

“This is unlike any other book I’ve read. Usually not a fan of romance, but I wanted to give this a shot because it’s about indigenous characters, one of whom is doing one of my dream jobs: archaeology. It shows how important it is to hire indigenous people to do projects within our own communities, though I wish there had been more academic representation from the Cree. The characters are all lovable and you quickly begin rooting for the main couple.”

“There were scenes in this book that were immersive and so emotional I had to stop for a moment to just think. And there were, through out, those turns of phrases and the way the author described setting that I would stop to highlight. There were also times that I stopped because the location and description of the reservation didn’t feel consistent with a remote Canadian reservation of only 400. I wondered why there weren’t more Cree, Ojibway archeologists, elders invited to share the stories help ID the artifacts. Speaking of artifacts I loved how respectful the MC was. When she thanked them, when she felt the ancestors in the wind I paused. It was moments like these, the friendship with Rosebud, the family dynamics, the humour(!) and the heartbreak of the romance that kept me going and I know I will be reading more off this author’s work.”
