The Adder is coming and one of their number will inherit its powers. They all want the honor, but young Eve is willing to do anything for the distinction.

A reckoning beyond Eve’s imagination begins when Chief Inspector Black arrives to investigate a brutal murder and their sacred ceremony goes terribly wrong.

“It took me a while to get into this one. I had a hard time following and couldn’t figure out if they were using made up words or I just wasn’t following the Scottish language. I’m still not entirely sure. It was a very sad, bleak read, that was almost a murder mystery if you squinted. I didn’t figure out the ending, which always delights me, and I found the idea of a castle on a hill inaccessible during high tide such a perfect setting for this story. I will say if you are stuck at the beginning, plow through because the end felt worth it to me.”
