Thinking Face“I have a soft spot for grief horror, but I think this one fits better under the speculative fiction or magical realism banner rather than horror. It's a story about grief over the death of a loved one and how far people will go to bring them back. However, it's also a story about different kinds of losses as well, the loss of the life you could have lived because of the obsession with living with ghosts, the loss of reality, of language, of identity, of a future. When a small community of houses seems to develop the powers to bring back the ghosts of a loved one, families will do anything to stake their claim on a home, even if it means camping out in front yards, or fatal fights during bidding wars. It's a strange and eerie place where time has stopped moving forward in a sense, noticed by Wenqi and Liam, the main characters as they notice their high school curriculum is still stuck in the 80s. Wenqi's mother, obsessed with beginning back her son, pays little attention to her daughter, barely acknowledging her existence. You feel both connected to the characters and their grief, but also disconnected as their feelings of isolation are palpable. Sad novella lovers, rejoice! Or um.. at least freely feel your feelings in this haunting story.”
