A new American classic from the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Gilead and
Housekeeping

Marilynne Robinson, one of the greatest novelists of our time, returns to the town of Gilead in an unforgettable story of a girlhood lived on the fringes of society in fear, awe, and wonder.
Lila, homeless and alone after years of roaming the countryside, steps inside a small-town Iowa church-the only available shelter from the rain-and ignites a romance and a debate that will reshape her life. She becomes the wife of a minister, John Ames, and begins a new existence while trying to make sense of the life that preceded her newfound security.
Neglected as a toddler, Lila was rescued by Doll, a canny young drifter, and brought up by her in a hardscrabble childhood. Together they crafted a life on the run, living hand to mouth with nothing but their sisterly bond and a ragged blade to protect them. Despite bouts of petty violence and moments of desperation, their shared life was laced with moments of joy and love. When Lila arrives in Gilead, she struggles to reconcile the life of her makeshift family and their days of hardship with the gentle Christian worldview of her husband which paradoxically judges those she loves.
Revisiting the beloved characters and setting of Robinson's Pulitzer Prize-winning Gilead and Home, a National Book Award finalist, Lila is a moving expression of the mysteries of existence that is destined to become an American classic.

“Lila is one of those books that feels less like a story and more like slipping into someone else’s thoughts for a while. It’s very character-driven, veryyyyyyyyyyy slow, and introspective, focusing on how someone outside of faith perceives religion—not in a judgmental way, but with genuine curiosity. As someone who’s always interested in how people see faith and what shapes their beliefs, I found this aspect really fascinating. Lila has spent most of her life homeless, moving from place to place, so she sees the world completely differently from the people around her. When she marries an older minister, it’s not some grand love story🤷🏻‍♀️it’s quiet, uncertain, and built on a lot of unspoken understanding. What I loved most were her conversations with him about life and faith. She constantly challenges his views, not in an argumentative way, but in a way that makes him stop and really think. Their discussions feel so intimate, like two people carefully trying to understand each other, even when they come from completely different worlds. The writing? Absolutely beautiful. It actually reminded me a little of Toni Morrison—not as raw, but with that same poetic, quiet power. It has this calm, meditative feel, like the kind of book you read slowly, letting the words settle. That being said, this book is very heavy on religious discussions. If that’s not your thing, it might not be for you. But if you love character-driven stories, deep conversations, and books that make you reflect, Lila is a quiet, thoughtful read that lingers with you long after you finish it.”
