Light Thickens
ByPublisher Description
From the Mystery Writers of America Grand Master, this tale of death at the Dolphin Theatre has “wit, charm, and oodles of atmosphere” (Kirkus Reviews).
Among theater folk, “the Scottish play” is considered unlucky, so much so that tradition requires anyone who utters its proper name backstage to leave the building, spin around, spit, curse, and then request permission to re-enter. As director Peregrine Jay directs a production of Shakespeare’s great work at the Dolphin Theater, misfortune does indeed abound, including some ugly practical jokes—and a grisly death for the leading man. It’s up to Roderick Alleyn to find out who has blood on their hands . . .

“The doyenne of traditional mystery writers.” —The New York Times

“An excellent swan song to Ngaio Marsh's Inspector Roderick Alleyn detective series. While I would have preferred more Alleyn and Fox to be built into the story, we were treated to an enjoyable story as we revisited old haunts and familiar friends, from a previous book in the series, Killer Dolphin. Marsh's extensive history in the theater came into handy, as she deftly wove her way through the casting, rehearsal and launching of a play onto the stage, in this case, the much accursed Macbeth. The majority of the story centered around writer/producer/director Peregrine Jay, his lovely wife Emily, and their 3 adorable boys, Robert, Robin, and Crispin. You truly get the sense of how Peregrine is able to shape and mold the play into his vision as the process moves forward. We have some over the top characters (albeit much more subdued than in prior books), but given these are theater people, I have to believe there is at least some truth to the characterizations. I'm not sure how much of this book I enjoyed as a standalone piece, versus an excellent part of a larger whole, but I still enjoyed it immensely, and I am happy to end the series on such a high note.”
