Publisher Description

'Gloriously provocative... female sexuality within a patriarchal world is Chughtai's central concern' Kamila Shamsie, winner of the Women's Prize for Fiction 2018, from the introduction

Lifting the Veil
is a bold and irreverent collection of writing from India's most controversial feminist writer. These stories celebrate life in all its complexities: from a woman who refuses marriage to a man she loves to preserve her freedom, to a Hindu and a Muslim teenager pulled apart by societal pressures, to eye-opening personal accounts of the charges of obscenity the author faced in court for stories found in this book.

Wickedly funny and unflinchingly honest, Lifting the Veil explores the power of female sexuality while slyly mocking the subtle tyrannies of middle-class life. In 1940s India, an unlikely setting for female rebellion, Ismat Chughtai was a rare and radical storyteller born years ahead of her time.

'Ismat Chughtai is known for her iconoclastic, feminist writings which explored the inner workings of women's lives' Huffington Post

Slightly Smiling Face“Hello readers! Did you miss us? Because we definitely missed you! Since the republic day is close We have just the suitable book review for it! LIFTING THE VEIL BY ISMAT CHUGHTAI Ismat chughtai is an Indian controversial feminist writer. It is a bold and relevant book consisting of 21 short stories. All the stories are nothing but a perspective of life's complexities. Ismat chughtai faced charges of obscenity in court for the stories found in this book. This book speaks one word to me, revolution in 2025 I cannot imagine the book exploring sexuality and gender in the pre partition of India. All I can say is the book was quite ahead of its time. Ismat chughtai's stories have broken stereotypes. 21 stories full of powerful female voices. The book explores female sexuality, gender, class. I personally love short stories and reading this book was a whole new experience for me as the stories were different but all the voices in my head made me lose count of the pages. The quilt explores the theme of societal norms The wedding suit explores the theme of poverty and struggling desire Kafir revolves around the story of forbidden love due to religious norms Touch me not story actually touched me a lot because the story reflects on sexual harassment, modesty of a "woman" the title touch me not sets boundaries. I connected with all the unflinching short stories and this book will be close to my heart for quite a while. Which of her work is closest to you? Let us know in the comments!”
