Life Together, originally written by Dietrich Bonhoeffer as a reflection and rule of life during his time as leader of the illegal seminary of the Confessing Church in Finkenwalde (Eastern Prussia) in the 1930s, is one of the classic texts of twentieth-century spirituality. Since its first publication in German in 1939, it has influenced Christian individuals and communities in their thinking of what it means to live a life before God. First published by SCM Press in 1954, it is now reissued with a Foreword by Bishop Guli Francis-Dehqani.

“A gorgeous work that is also blessedly short (many great works have bloatedness as their only detraction). I would consider this essential reading for someone in ministry or for anyone seeking to foster a healthy religious community. There are numerous useful passages and quotes that I return to:
"I can never know beforehand how God's image should appear in others."
"We pray for the big things and forget to give thanks for the ordinary, small (and yet not really small) gifts. How can God entrust great things to one who will not thankfully receive the little things?"
"Even when sin and misunderstanding burden the communal life, is not the sinning brother still a brother, with whom I too stand under the word of Christ?"
This was obviously written in the context of a 1940's German underground church, so some of the specifics are not directly prescriptive. I see that has caused some to give a lower rating, but the usefulness and wisdom of the principles I think ring true regardless of our differences so I really can't give it lower than 5 stars.”
