Life Among the Savages
ByPublisher Description
In a hilariously charming domestic memoir, America’s celebrated master of terror turns to a different kind of fright: raising children.
In her celebrated fiction, Shirley Jackson explored the darkness lurking beneath the surface of small-town America. But in Life Among the Savages, she takes on the lighter side of small-town life. In this witty and warm memoir of her family’s life in rural Vermont, she delightfully exposes a domestic side in cheerful contrast to her quietly terrifying fiction. With a novelist’s gift for character, an unfailing maternal instinct, and her signature humor, Jackson turns everyday family experiences into brilliant adventures.

“Felt like sitting down and having coffee with my favorite author. Despite being mostly unrelatable (I will never have a house like that, or that many children, or a writing career, or a husband that makes me sew buttons) I loved Jackson's sarcastic and self aware way of writing about motherhood and feeling like the odd one out in most social situations. It's rare that a book makes me laugh out loud despite myself, but this one had me cackling in solidarity in places. I also loved being able to spot little breadcrumbs of her fiction in places throughout her personal stories. This was such a comfortable read, and I can see myself turning to it again in the future.”
