“Look, I don’t usually do “coming of age” stories. Maybe I’m just too grown for all that now (gasp—30?!). But listen, these characters? They are so well-rounded and real, I couldn’t help but be invested. Watching them grow and evolve into the future upstanding citizens of their fictional world? Chef’s kiss.
Alice? Oh, I was rooting for her from page one! Watching her step up, go to therapy, and actually do the work to figure her life out? ICONIC. Especially in a book that’s speaking directly to young Black readers—it’s refreshing and necessary.
And Takumi? Oh, he is cutie code black personified, and I am absolutely here for it. All the green flags, none of the nonsense—Alice needed this, deserved this, and I was cheering the whole time.
Now, Feeny? Whew. She was a little too relatable at times, and staring into that mirror was… an experience. But honestly? I needed it. And the way her arc wrapped up? Perfect. No notes.
