“The writing of this book was very reminiscent of Toni Morrison’s style. Very beautiful, poetic styled writing that describes painful and deeply traumatic topics. While the story was very much slow paced, I did appreciate the exploration of the main characters relationships with spirits. Her difficulty trusting them and her anger towards, but her need of them was relatable and felt very real. Her need for tenderness and soft moments during her incredibly difficult life was so touching and heartbreaking. Her connection to her mother and grandmother was beautifully tragic. They left her with so much but it so so unfortunate that they were ripped apart. A couple times, I was confused as to what was happening but overall, this was a hard read, that was written in a lovely way.”About Jesmyn Ward
Jesmyn Ward received her MFA from the University of Michigan and has received the MacArthur Genius Grant, a Stegner Fellowship, a John and Renee Grisham Writers Residency, the Strauss Living Prize, and the 2022 Library of Congress Prize for American Fiction. She is the winner of two National Book Awards for Fiction for Sing, Unburied, Sing and Salvage the Bones. She is also the author of the novel Where the Line Bleeds and the memoir Men We Reaped, which was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award and won the Chicago Tribune Heartland Prize and the Media for a Just Society Award. She is currently a professor of creative writing at Tulane University and lives in Mississippi.
