Let Me Hear a Rhyme

By Tiffany D. Jackson
Let Me Hear a Rhyme by Tiffany D. Jackson digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

In this striking new novel by the critically acclaimed author of Allegedly and Monday’s Not Coming, Tiffany D. Jackson tells the story of three Brooklyn teens who plot to turn their murdered friend into a major rap star by pretending he's still alive.

Brooklyn, 1998. Biggie Smalls was right: Things done changed. But that doesn’t mean that Quadir and Jarrell are cool letting their best friend Steph’s music lie forgotten under his bed after he’s murdered—not when his rhymes could turn any Bed Stuy corner into a party.

With the help of Steph’s younger sister Jasmine, they come up with a plan to promote Steph’s music under a new rap name: the Architect. Soon, everyone wants a piece of him. When his demo catches the attention of a hotheaded music label rep, the trio must prove Steph’s talent from beyond the grave.

As the pressure of keeping their secret grows, Quadir, Jarrell, and Jasmine are forced to confront the truth about what happened to Steph. Only, each has something to hide. And with everything riding on Steph’s fame, they need to decide what they stand for or lose all that they’ve worked so hard to hold on to—including each other.

"Jackson scores a bullseye with her passionate homage to Black city life in the late ’90s." (Publishers Weekly, "An Anti-Racist Children's and YA Reading
List")

“This didn’t give thriller it was just a bit messed up in my opinion. No matter the reason I HATE posthumous music but to go to this extreme is crazy and a tad disrespectful to the deceased.”
“This story takes place in New York in the 90s. It’s full of references and culture. The time period is around when Biggie and Tupac were killed. Then a teenager with big hip-hop dreams and a love for his community gets murdered, and his two best friends and his sister keep his memory alive by releasing his music and trying to get him a record deal by pretending he’s not dead. They do this as they try to figure out what really happened to him. I really enjoyed this story and glad it had a happy ending!”
“The vibessss in this book were immaculate! Oh how I wish I was a teenager in the 90s! The tribute to the hip-hop and rap scene during this time just gave me so much joy. This was a heartfelt story that shed so much light on the beauty of friendship and community and how music can bring us all together. The characters were so lovable and endearing, and I liked that we got a POV for each of them because it allowed us to see more of them and truly understand the depth and complexities of them. It was emotional, heartwarming and just overall a beautiful story. Tiffany D. Jackson truly just can't disappoint me!”
