“This is what a great fantasy should”

“It has been a long time coming to read this novel; it has been on my TBR for a couple of years. Overall, I’m giving it a three-star review because, although it had a unique magic system and important messaging about grief, it was ultimately too drawn out for its ending. I really enjoyed the references to the Arthurian legend and the views on institutional oppression. My biggest letdown was the explanation of Bree’s journey towards feeling comfortable with her history and identity. There were characters like Alice and her dad who felt like their purpose was to show how her “old life” was weighing her down. I think there could have been more exploration of her history or more explanation of the Arthurian connections, but it felt like a rushed romance took center stage. In terms of the romance, I found the chemistry among multiple characters lacking and wasn’t invested enough to continue the rest of the series. Ultimately, I’m glad I read it.”
