Publisher Description

Learning to Bow has been heralded as one of the funniest, liveliest, and most insightful books ever written about the clash of cultures between America and Japan. With warmth and candor, Bruce Feiler recounts the year he spent as a teacher in a small rural town. Beginning with a ritual outdoor bath and culminating in an all-night trek to the top of Mt. Fuji, Feiler teaches his students about American culture, while they teach him everything from how to properly address an envelope to how to date a Japanese girl.

Thumbs Up“A really great account of his experiences of Japan, I’m glad I read this partially before and then after travelling to Japan because it became highly relatable. I thought this book may have been outdated but it is still extremely poignant and describes both the experiences of people who are ‘made in Japan’ and people who are there to visit. I have learnt so much from this book and will often refer back to it.”
“This was a lovely explanation of cultural differences between Americans and Japanese from a very understanding perspective. I learned a lot from this book and I think its benefits still hold up. However, quite a bit of it is not as accurate anymore as it once was and so I suggest that if you read this, do a little modern research as well!”
