I’m willing to bet Ms. Nakamura wasn’t a vegan chef before “indulging her fascination with the magic of words” because she completely butchered this beloved character and his story.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, if you want to want to go off the deep in, go crazy and write your own story, but leave poor Jane Austen out of it. This is no reimagining of Pride and Prejudice; it’s a complete restructuring...and not a good one. She totally destroys the original and builds a hunk of crap on top.
Again, if you want to write a story, that’s your own business, but if you’re going to associate it with an existing work, I reserve the right to complain when it doesn’t live up to expectations.
Back to the original question. What has she done to poor Mr. Darcy?
Nakamura tries to make Darcy into some socially inept, rich Sheldon Cooper, but if she was hoping that would endear him to readers, she failed miserably. He comes across like an anachronistic caricature. His voice is wooden and robotic, and he's turned into some mansplaining moron with a pathetic character arc.
Like Darcy, Nakamura's writing is stilted and one-dimensional. If this were a food review, I’d call the story dry, inedible, and deconstructed beyond recognition.

Not only is Austen’s work completely destroyed, the actual story is an absolute mess. The various elements are thrown together haphazardly, creating a hodgepodge weirder than anything you could find on Chopped.

Nakamura was a chef? Lizzy’s a chef. Nakamura’s Japanese? So are the Bennets. Nakamura wants to be a writer? Guess what, Darcy does too. Nakamura used to travel? Let’s add that to the story, too. I’m all for drawing inspiration from what you know, but you’ve got to make it work as a cohesive narrative.

After their disastrous first meeting, Darcy suddenly turns into an infatuated schoolgirl and bumbling moron. Lizzy, for her part, takes only a little longer to get over her hatred for the man who ruined her family’s lives and fall in love because he’s tall, dark, and socially awkward. If the rapidly changing opinions aren’t enough to give you whiplash,

And let's not forget how Wickham is randomly thrown in towards the end just for kicks.
The story content is bad but so is the actual story telling. The writing is sloppy. I was on the second page and already felt like Nakamura was being redundant. Then she throws in random, unnecessary Japanese words. Now I’ve read my fair share of stories with other languages in it and have had no problem with it (hey, more power to the bilinguals,) but this is not incorporated well at all. It makes the whole flow of the story awkward and clumsy. There are some parts that seem contradictory (one page she forgives him, the next page she doesn't?) or unnecessarily tedious (the pointless road trip section). I wasn't looking for them, but I did spot a few typos. It is also no great exaggeration to say there are major spacing issues on every other page. I caved and joined the dark side got a Kindle, so I know it's not my fault this time.
