“I stumbled across this story in the midst of reading an ARC of the upcoming full-length novel, Rath’s Deception. This short story is a great introduction to the actual book, but I can tell it will also be something fun to go back and read if you’ve already read the book (which is sort of my case). The setup was great. Like other people have mentioned, my only real complaint was that it was so short, even for a short story; the whole concept of assassin-whose-life-depends-on-his-ability-to-carry-out-a-mission-that-has-just-become-a-free-for-all could definitely be expanded into a novella or even a full-length novel. The ending was rather predictable, but in some ways I think that was the point. This story (the Janus Group series as a whole) is pretty dark and gritty, and in that respect the end was very fitting.
