“This book took me a while to get through, admittedly partly through my own laziness. The first half felt particularly slow, and it felt like I’d read for hours without feeling any progression in the story. Ironically, maybe, because I came to appreciate the deliberate, careful slowness of Zhang’s prose by the end. There were passages that grew too wordy even for me, and the long chapters that seemed like a drag in the beginning were more like a pit to get lost in by the end. In the end Zhang captured me in the story, and the conclusion brought a slight pit in my gut that I hadn’t expected. I’d be hesitant to recommend the book, it does take some work, but I don’t regret the TBR’s I put aside to finish this.”
