Lady Hotspur

By Tessa Gratton
Lady Hotspur by Tessa Gratton digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

Tessa Gratton's Lady Hotspur is a sweeping, heart-stopping Shakespearean novel of betrayal and battlefields and destiny.

STRIKE FAST, LOVE HARD, LIVE FOREVER

This is the motto of the Lady Knights—sworn to fealty under a struggling kingdom, promised to defend the prospective heir, Banna Mora.

But when a fearsome rebellion overthrows the throne, Mora is faced with an agonizing choice: give up everything she's been raised to love, and allow a king-killer to be rewarded—or retake the throne, and take up arms against the newest heir, Hal Bolingbrooke, Mora's own childhood best friend and sworn head of the Lady Knights.

Hal loathes being a Prince; she's much more comfortable instated on the Throne of Misrule, a raucous underground nether-court where passion rules all. She yearns to live up to the wishes of everyone she loves best—but that means sacrificing her own heart, and so she will disappoint everyone until the moment she can rise to prove those expectations wrong.

And between these two fierce Princes is the woman who will decide all their fates—Lady Hotspur, the fiery and bold knight whose support will turn the tides of the coming war.

“If ever there was a playwriter who called out to be retold as epic fantasy Shakespeare leaps to mind, specifically in this case Henry IV part I. Give me a genderswapped Hal and give me the wild cast of “Lady Knights” and her mother, the rebel Queen Celeda. The titular Lady Hotspur is a brilliant soldier and commander, and she helps Celeda overthrow the king in the opening chapter. Hal and Hotspur’s friend Banna Mora, the heir to the deposed king, is forced to give her title of “prince” to the new heir, Hal. And there is a prophecy of a Lion, A dragon and a Wolf to decide whom rules. Set generations after Gratton’s earlier Shakespeare fantasy retelling, The Queens of Innis Lear this story in the neighboring nation of Aremoria. A brilliant return to a well crafted world, with that worlds intriguing magic and characters makes me hope for more of these marvellous retellings.”
Slightly Smiling Face“I enjoyed this quite a bit! The world building is beautiful, especially the soft magic seeping into the world. I also felt like the epilogue really stuck the landing, it was beautiful. That said some of the world building was a bit difficult to keep track of, especially the family lines and there some parts of the plot that felt like they weren’t really explained it was just ‘because magic’. Also this is not a point by point retelling, I think it’s better because of that but don’t expect a simple gender reverse of Shakespeare because while it is that there’s more going on. Anyway I had fun with this!”
