Recently engaged and ready to celebrate, Red and her friends Sakura, Thorn, and Gloria leave Belville behind for a girls' trip to Helenia. The island is known for its history, its theater, and its beauty . . . but under the surface, something dark is lurking.

On her first night out, Red meets a pair of locals whose friendly smiles hide many secrets. By morning, one woman is missing, and the other is found dead. But the local police are preoccupied with bigger problems–all, that is, except for one young and hopeful Officer Herakles. As an officer back home herself, Thorn is all too ready to take him under her wing. The rest of Red's friends would rather spend their vacation vacationing–until the missing woman, Ida, shows up and takes refuge in their rented villa. 

Ida is full of stories about encounters with a crime lord named Pluto, and her tales lead Red directly to the Botanical Garden and a living maze–not to mention its enigmatic inventor. As the myths and rumors pile up, Red and her friends are drawn deeper into Helenia's underworld. If they want to emerge unscathed, they'll need much more than a ball of string . . .
