Mais tout s’est dénaturé autour de lui : son épouse, Renée, la femme qui se conduit en homme, si belle et désœuvrée ; son fils, Maxime, l’amant efféminé de sa belle-mère. On accusa Zola d’obscénité. Il répliqua : « Une société n’est forte que lorsqu’elle met la vérité sous la grande lumière du soleil. »
