Krampus

By Brom
Krampus by Brom digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

“Terrific. A wild ride….I loved it. It hooked me and I couldn’t put it down.”
—Mike Mignola, creator of Hellboy

"Brom is that rare breed: a person who is skilled in more than one area of artistic expression. Here's hoping that he will continue to share his dark and often beautiful dreams with us for many years to come." —Christopher Paolini, New York Times bestselling author of Eragon

Acclaimed author and artist Brom raised eyebrows and pulse rates with The Child Thief, his grim, brilliantly audacious, gorgeously illustrated reimagining of the Peter Pan legend. So what does this innovative fantasist do for an encore? He tinkers darkly with the beloved mythology of Santa Claus.

Set in the mountains of Appalachia, Krampus the Yule Lord is a twisted fairytale steeped in folk horror about a failed West Virginia songwriter who gets ensnared on Christmas Eve in an eternal war between a not-so-saintly Saint Nick and his dark enemy Krampus, aka Black Peter, an ancient trickster demon. This dark fantasy novel is Gregory Maguire (Wicked) meets Susanna Clarke (Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell) in the realm of Guillermo Del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth, as Clive Barker (Mr. B. Gone) works his dark sorcery from the shadows. Once again featuring Brom’s chillingly beautiful artwork throughout, Krampus the Yule Lord is a feast of wonder straight from the kitchen of Sweeney Todd.

Krampus Reviews

“This is my third time reading this book. It will be my yearly tradition at Christmas time. I love, love, love this book. Santa banished Krampus to wither and eventually die after centuries of suffering. Krampus’ loyal band of monstrous, gray-skinned acolytes known as Belsnickels, are trying to find away to free him from his prison. Jesse, down on his luck, accidentally finds Santa’s Christmas bag. Now Jesse is caught up in the fight between good and evil, Krampus and Santa. He has the magic bag, so who wins here. I actually really fell for Krampus. He’s the underdog and was treated badly. Santa is on a power trip! Who’s gonna win this war on Christmas.”
“I really enjoyed the plot of this one, and I always enjoy Brom's writing voice. The story had great pacing, but I was a little disappointed that the Dillard situation wrapped up so... anticlimactically. I was really hoping for a more dramatic end for him - one where he faces a few more consequences socially. Also disappointed there was no aside on Chet's actual whereabouts. Would have loved to see Isabell's reunion with her son. Overall a good book! A few loose ends for me, and a disappointing end to a villain, but an enjoyable story.”
