Kiss Me Kill Me by Lauren Henderson digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

When 16-year-old Scarlett Wakefield transfers from St. Tabby’s to Wakefield Hall Collegiate, she is relieved that no one knows her dark, haunting secret. A few months ago, Scarlett was invited to an elite party with a guest list full of the hottest names in British society, including Dan McAndrew. Before the party, Scarlett had only imagined what it would be like to have her first kiss with Dan, but on the penthouse terrace, Dan leaned in close and she no longer had to wonder. Their kiss was beautiful and perfect and magical, and then . . . Dan McAndrew took his last breath as she held him in her arms. No one knows how or why Dan died, and everyone at St. Tabby’s believes Scarlett had something to do with it. But now that she’s safely hidden away at Wakefield Hall, Scarlett would rather forget that it ever happened. Only she can’t. Especially when she receives an anonymous note that will set her on the path to clearing her name and finding out what really happened to the first and last boy she kissed.

Expressionless Face“This book was written in the late 2000s, and it definitely reads like it. This is a first person narrative from a teenage girl who has all of the insecurities therein. She’s a gymnast, but she talks about her fat thighs. She, like the other girls at her all-girls’ school, judge others for being “fat”, describes a girl as “butch”, shows classism and mocks the other girls mentally for being rich and shallow, even though she herself comes from a wealthy family. She describes her friends as ugly, and drops them for a chance to join the in crowd and go to a party. The book reads like the Gossip Girl TV show, in the worst possible way. The author writes well, and has some excellent descriptions - but they’re coming from a borderline unlikable protagonist. Interspersed randomly among the chapters are diary entries written by an unknown person. At first, it seems like the protagonist is writing the entries, but as they go, it’s clear someone else is writing them, setting up a mystery that ends up being more annoying than anything. When the protagonist does find out the author and reads the diary, it sets up a new mystery that doesn’t go anywhere in this book. Which brings me to the biggest criticism I have: nothing in the book’s narrative or synopsis or interior author materials led me to believe this was the first of a series. I had to look up whether there were sequels, and found it was the first in a four book series. This book gives the protagonist closure on her main concern, but ends with her determined to solve the mystery of why and who in regard to the boy who died kissing her. She knows she didn’t kill him intentionally, that she was set up, but when she discovers this, the book is nearly over and then stops as she’s considering that her new friend, whom she’s described as a large butch American girl, will be really helpful in solving the mystery. The end. Nothing saying that a book two is coming soon, no preview chapter, no book one anywhere in the physical copy. So if you don’t already know there’s more, it’s like the story just stops and leaves everything open. And that’s how I felt at the end. Like the story stopped at the end of the first act. And that is incredibly frustrating when there’s nothing to indicate that this is the start of a series. Will I hunt down the sequels? Nope. This book is going to the used book store.”
“Mean girl meets mystery but this is a series and the first book does leave you on a cliff hanger”
