By Richard Kadrey
King Bullet by Richard Kadrey digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

The incredible finale of the page-turning, high-octane Sandman Slim series filled with an explosive ending and intense kick-ass action from New York Times bestselling author Richard Kadrey.

It’s been three months since Stark stopped a death cult and a potential ghost apocalypse, and he’s at loose ends. His personal life is a mess. His professional life isn’t much better. And the world…well, the world is going to shit. L.A. is gripped by a viral epidemic that has everyone wearing masks and keeping their distance from each other. But what’s even more frightening is the Shoggot gang and their leader, King Bullet, who revels in the city’s collapse.

Who is King Bullet? No one knows. He seemingly came from nowhere with nothing but a taste for mayhem and an army of crazed killers who follow his every command. What king wants seems simple on it face: Chaos. Destruction. A city in flames. But there’s more to the king and his plans for L.A. and what Stark discovers will change Heaven, Earth, and Stark himself forever.

Expressionless Face“I'm finally at the end of this series, and while I hoped that it would end with a bang, the previous book didn't give me much confidence of that. Sadly, I turned out to be right. The story continues with Stark still trying to come to terms with his new life as not being Sandman Slim anymore. However, there is a magical plague going around the Los Angeles area that is brought by a new villain, King Bullet. Since the useless Sub Rosa council is useless, it's up to Stark (again) to investigate this. The plot has the same beats as many of the other books in this series, only this time, it's lost all of its fun. Gone is most of the banter between Stark, his fighting partners, and his enemies. He's still a smart ass from time to time, but it feels quite toned down. Maybe it's his self-loathing and "woe is me" attitude that he carries around all the time now, but his snarky comments just don't seem to hit as hard anymore. The rest of the characters are just as toned down as well. Throughout the series, it's been fun having vibrant and interesting people like Candy, Brigitte, Kasabian, and even Father Traven around. All of these have taken a back seat so that Janet and F*ck Hollywood (dumbest name in any series I've read) can get more time, and they are totally uninteresting. I would almost rather have Mason back than read about these two. And then there's King Bullet himself. While he's a decent villain, his whole motivation and backstory falls flat for me. I didn't care for his lineage, and I didn't care for him either. As seems to always be the case, the best part of this book is when Samael shows up. His heist with Stark is EASILY the most fun of the story. We could have used much more of him. One final thought is the ending is completely unsatisfying. Stark has given everything to those he cares about, and after everything is over, we get a line or two explaining where they are, and that's it. It feels very, very hollow. This is a lackluster finale to the series. While I'm glad I read it and had a lot of fun, it definitely ran out of steam and probably should have ended a couple books back.”
