She passes the time by playing her violin in her favorite lonely area and assisting her aunt and uncle on the farm. Eric brings a whole new universe and a friendship that excites and frightens her with him when he wanders into her secret orchard. Kilmeny is aware that he will soon have to return to his life on the mainland, a world filled with business meetings, parties, and prejudiced individuals, where she will hold him back and prevent him from ever fitting in. The fact that she believes the only way to love him is by letting him go makes it difficult for Eric to convince her that she is the one woman he will ever love.

“I loved this book when I was a teen, but upon rereading, I once again find myself questioning the literary tastes of my younger self. This book unfortunately hyper-fixates on youthful innocence and beauty as the most desirable traits in a woman, and clearly it has aged poorly. I have tried to find if there is another way to view the story that doesn’t make the MMC so shallow, but honestly, there’s no other way to see it. Eric is a good guy who meets a girl so innocent and perfect that he must have her.
I don’t know… I can see how this wasn’t problematic storytelling once upon a time, but it’s just not a good romance for today. And the monologuing. So much monologuing.”
