Kiki Kallira Breaks a Kingdom
ByPublisher Description
For fans of the Aru Shah and Serpent's Secret series, this action-packed fantasy-adventure sees a girl's drawings of Indian mythology spring to vivid life--including the evil god who seeks to enter the real world and destroy it.
Kiki Kallira has always been a worrier. Did she lock the front door? Is there a terrible reason her mom is late? Recently her anxiety has been getting out of control, but one thing that has always soothed her is drawing. Kiki's sketchbook is full of fanciful doodles of the rich Indian myths and legends her mother has told her over the years.
One day, her sketchbook's calming effect is broken when her mythological characters begin springing to life right out of its pages. Kiki ends up falling into the mystical world she drew, which includes a lot of wonderful discoveries like the band of rebel kids who protect the kingdom, as well as not-so-great ones like the ancient deity bent on total destruction. As the one responsible for creating the evil god, Kiki must overcome her fear and anxiety to save both worlds--the real and the imagined--from his wrath. But how can a girl armed with only a pencil defeat something so powerful?

“Great middle grade fantasy where about a girl who has severe anxiety but still has to save a kingdom. I related to this anxious girl a little too much for being an old lady 🤣”
“The narrator's high-pitched voice is hard for me to listen to. Probably won't seek out a different format because the pacing is a bit slow as well. I like the author's books aimed at an adult audience but this is not my cup of tea. DNF at 14% (about an hour in).”
“The author really is good at pulling off a story of someone feeling out of place finding their way in life. I enjoyed the found family elements in this, especially between her and Pip. The inclusion of Indian mythology was so fun and interesting. I absolutely love a solid mythology inspired middle grade/YA book! I loved the themes of making mistakes, being brave, and understanding/forgiveness. I also love how Kiki's anxiety and possible OCD (I'm not well informed so I may be wrong since it's not specifically stated) is addressed and even almost sort of manifested into the plot. There was so much to this story and it was as much heartwarming as it was adventure. I love what this author does and hope she continues both with her adult and middle grade book series!”
“This was such a fun read. I loved all the characters in the world that Sangu created. I appreciated the diversity and the mental health representation.
It was a quick read and kept me guessing. I like to focus on how we all have something valuable to contribute and that bravery isn’t always about heroically fighting monsters with swords.”
