“A novel that often reads like a play, being dialogue- and monologue-heavy and full of stage exit moments. The language in said dialogues is delightful and often witty (I have now read so many descriptors attached to the term ‘knave’ that I am inspired to use my own in daily life).
I don’t expect historical fiction to stick completely faithfully to historical fact. HAVING SAID THAT, Sir Walter was REALLY messing with the timelines, here. The story is supposedly set just before and during Queen Elizabeth’s visit to Kenilworth Castle, in 1575, but the focus of much of the action, Amy Robsart, wife of Robert Dudley, in reality died in 1560… three years before Dudley was given the castle. Besides which, the implication was that Dudley had quite recently and secretly married Amy, against the Queen’s probable wishes, which the historical Dudley did in 1550, years before Elizabeth ascended to the throne. In short, I was somewhat confused about the timeline we were following, how old the main characters were supposed to be in this version of events, etc.
But, you know, it was fun, and I did read most of this in Kenilworth itself (including at the Castle), the summer that the town is celebrating the 450th anniversary of QEI’s most important visit to the castle.”
