Kelcie Murphy and the Academy for the Unbreakable Arts

By Erika Lewis
Kelcie Murphy and the Academy for the Unbreakable Arts by Erika Lewis digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

Brimming with Celtic mythology, action, and danger, Erika Lewis's Kelcie Murphy and The Academy for the Unbreakable Arts introduces readers to a new kind of magical school and a warrior who must choose with which side of an epic battle her destiny will lie.

The Otherworld is at war. The Academy for the Unbreakable Arts trains warriors. And Kelcie Murphy—a foster child raised in the human world—is dying to attend.

A place at AUA means meeting Scáthach, the legendary trainer of Celtic heroes. It means learning to fight with a sword. It means harnessing her hidden powers and—most importantly—finding out who her parents are, and why they abandoned her in Boston Harbor eight years ago.

When Kelcie tests into the school, she learns that she’s a Saiga, one of the most ancient beings in the Otherworld. Secretive, shunned, and possessed of imposing elemental powers, the Saiga are also kin to the Otherworld's most infamous traitor.

But Kelcie is a survivor, and she’ll do whatever it takes to find her parents and her place in their world. Even if that means making a few enemies.

“⭐️3.75⭐️ I have some conflicted thoughts about this book. On one hand, I think the plot and the world in this book were amazing. I loved the lite and the way everything was explained; it could have been more confusing, but it wasn’t. On the other hand, I had a lot of pet peeves with this book. Most prominently, the writing, in that the author used exclamation in places where it was just unnecessary. Places where, if this were 1st person and it was the MC’s own personal thought from their POV, then it might have worked? But this is third person limited, and the exclamation points at a lot of times were unnecessary. Another con: the characters. I did like the characters and all, but the main problem I had was with Kelcie, the MC. Well, really her relationship with her main love interest. Like, they’re just friends; thats been made clear. But we all know they both like each other; MC and love interest included. But the way Kelcie teases them his person is just out of character for her. Kelcie is this, not shy, but not outgoing girl, and she has trouble making friends for a variety of reasons. Shes not very expressive or outgoing, again, and thats her thing. But when she -can we call what she does flirting? I don’t think so- interacts with this character at times, she is outgoing, is expressive; shes out of character. Like punching him in the shoulder when he talks about another female character (idk if that’s exactly what happened, but that’s it in general). Shes almost acting like a semi-jealous not-girlfriend, and it’s just out of character. One last thing about the writing: the way information is introduced. Like (and this was really prominent towards the end) when we have a bunch of reveals and plot twists, as per usual at the end of a book. And yet we get no time to process the information. This person is this? Yup, but you get five seconds to inhale that and we move on. That happened??!!!! Sure, keep going. Now, is this on purpose? I’m not sure. If it is, it would make sense that the author is trying to branch out and give this a more realistic and thriller type feeling, because you don’t get time to stop and process stuff as it happened in real life, do you??? But I don’t think this works for a book. I need time for that information to sink into my brain. I need time to process, and those twists during the end just didn’t give me that time. Now, you may be saying two things to yourself at the moment: a) dang, thats a lot of random stuff to latch onto, this reviewer is really harsh. To that, I say the opposite. I’m usually a very cushy review in my star ratings. BUT, I need to point out the discrepancies and mistakes in the book. I just have to. It’s in my nature. So, to you this may seem like random, useless things that aren’t even noticeable. But once I see something, it sticks in my brain until the end of the book. And I put it in the review. b) why is this a 3.75 star rating if theres so many cons? To that, I have two answers: one, again, im a cushy star reviewer. But two, and more relevant, it was the story. I truly got enveloped in this world and this story; I found it genuinely interesting and fun. Especially for a middle grade book, the fantasy im here was great. The fact that I thought of this book when I wasn’t reading it? Added bonus. So it got a higher rating because the world and the plot cancelled out a few of those negatives. Not all of them, since this is till a 3.75, which I don’t rate often below 4, but definitely a few. So yeah, I really liked the plot and world in this book, but the writing style and characters/character development were underwhelming and took away from the rest of the book.”
