Kate in Waiting

By Becky Albertalli
Kate in Waiting by Becky Albertalli digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

From #1 New
York Times
bestselling author and rom-com queen Becky Albertalli comes
a buoyant new novel about daring to step out of the shadows and into the
spotlight in love, life, and, yes, theater.

Contrary to popular
belief, best friends Kate Garfield and Anderson Walker are not codependent. Carpooling to and from theater rehearsals?
Environmentally sound and efficient. Consulting each other on every single life
decision? Basic good judgment. Pining for the same guys from afar? Shared
crushes are more fun anyway.

But when Kate and
Andy’s latest long-distance crush shows up at
their school
, everything goes off-script. Matt Olsson is talented and
sweet, and Kate likes him. She really
likes him. The only problem? So does Anderson.

Turns out, communal
crushes aren’t so fun when real feelings are involved. This one might even
bring the curtains down on Kate and Anderson’s friendship.

“I was confused half the book and didnt really understand their friendship but it was likeable”
“I'm definitely too old to fully enjoy this, but I was in the mood for a love triangle and didn't want to read about emotionally immature adults, so I figured I'd have better luck with a YA novel. Ultimately, it's not like a new favorite or anything, but I'm glad teenagers have books like this now. On a lot of ways, it feels like the genre has grown and improved so much since I was a teenager. I was really impressed by how the teenaged characters made multiple attempts to talk out their problems, how they recognized when the first attempt at communication didn't resolve the issue and tried again. It felt very true to what I remember about being a teenager, striving for maturity. I definitely made "ground rules" with friends as a kid that turned out to be toxic later and those experiences are what have lead me to be able to communicate effectively as an adult now. I also just appreciate it as someone who hates when book characters don't just talk to each other. It's so much more interesting when those conversations are included and shown to be not working, rather than the author trying to convince the reader to just accept that they wouldn't work. Throughout the book, the protagonists refer to the school athletes as "f-boys" and "f-girls" and collectively, "the f-force". Occasionally characters will give them a little bit of push back on this, but I wish that the author had gone a bit farther with this. Like the athletic kids are also just kids trying to navigate a really awkward and confusing time in life. I understand why the main character and her squad didn't like them, but it felt like a glaring opportunity for her character to grow and view people with more complexity and it just never happened. Also it was just kind of cringe-inducing, to be honest. As a final thought, I listened to this on audiobook and I would not reccomend it. The narrator doesn't change her voice at all for different characters and it was often very hard to tell who was speaking. The book itself I would definitely reccomend to high-school aged readers though.”
