“I finished reading this book quite quickly. It's a short book, and by the time I was finished I thought "hm ok that's neat" and was a bit confused why this book was written. The story, much like the prose, was just ok. It felt oddly paced and was really built around 2 main events six years apart and both related to Charles Dickens. Too much time was given to oysters and the fish market and John Diamond and not enough was given to developing Sarah or adding descriptions to the setting or DESCRIBING THE RIPPLE EFFECTS OF JUBA'S DANCES.
After I fnished the book, I decided to look up Master Juba, and the motherfucker INVENTED TAP DANCING. What?? Where was that in the book???? There's a few mentions of hard soles but no indication that he was that big of an influence on dancing. I think it's a failure if the book about the guy who invented tap dancing fails to inform me that he invented tap dancing
