“I have to preface that I've only watched the 2019 movie rendition of Little Women, and have no other Little Women experience beyond that. I bought the book for its beautiful cover at a thrift store and after reading the little "Before You Begin" section I realized I needed more context to read the book. So, I just quickly looked up the movie, watched it, and started the book the next day. I LOVED THE MOVIE. And was rooting for Jo and Laurie the whole time. So I decided I needed to read this book to finally get that happy ending. And my thoughts are... (SPOILERS)
Just no. A good chunk of the book didn't even have Jo and Laurie in the same town! And in that chunk, it was all just bleh about Jo not finishing her second book. I'm sorry, but I really don't care! The beginning was fantastic (slow) but lots of connections between Jo and Laurie. I really loved the swimming hole scene. The romantic gestures of Laurie in New York were so beautiful and thoughtful. But then, after all of that, for her to still say no (in a book that is supposed to be about Jo saying "YES!")? And then to just talk about not being able to finish her book and trying to kill off Amy IN THE SAME WAY AS BETH, was just BORING! Then, even after all that, after she finally did say yes (not even 15 pages from the end of the book!) they squeezed in some random stuff that could have been GREAT in that boring middle section to help us maybe understand why Jo decided to change her mind about Laurie instead of us just assuming that she changed her mind because of what??? BEING JEALOUS?? AND SPENDING 2 MONTHS MISSING HIM?! I needed more! More bickering and teasing, instead of stuff with her mother. They could have at least spent those last 10 pages adding some cutesy couple banter that I was hoping for throughout the book.
Ok and can we please talk about all the twinkling of eyes and tears and red faces? Like good grief.”

“I have loved Melissa's books in the past. Alex and Eliza had me in a grip, so I jumped at it when I saw it at Barnes and Noble. It had this sense of being a fanfiction while still sticking to the story. I love retellings like this where I know the end idea of the story, but I never know where the plot twists and turns are going to take me. Do I think that the romance and the deciding factor of Jo and Laurie getting together was a little rushed? Yeah. I felt like there were a lot of loose threads that were tied together really quickly and could've used a bit more care. Also, the fact that someone had to be sick to get that "Little Women" feel was a little much for me. But overall, a pretty good book that was an easy day read.”
