I have always been fascinated by the story of Jekyll and Hyde, the duality of man and the nature of good vs evil. How far can our actions go to be seen as evil?
This was a very sweet yet interesting story and I really enjoyed listening to it. I loved our FMC Muriel, she was kind, polite and fierce all at the same time. She could stand her ground and knew how to use her status to her advantage, in a society where women are deemed to be a housewife and married off. Being set in London, I loved the British mannerisms and the eerie vibes that lurked constantly throughout the book. It captivated me, yet at times I was a bit lost and didn't know where the story was going. But I loved the moments between Henry and Muriel, getting hints of their past and the emotions that lingered between them. They had a very sweet relationship, with Muriel being quick witted and fierce, and Henry being the shy and reserved one which made for a very interesting dynamic between them.
Henry was a very layered and complex character, yet completely human in his actions too. He had troubles from his past that he hadn't healed from and grappling with the complexity of turning into Jekyll which was out of his control. Seeing the friendship that Muriel forms with Jekyll and how she helped Henry embrace that side of him, rather than shunning him was very sweet and heartwarming. While Henry was quite lost and couldn't find his place in the world, reuniting with Muriel and the blossoming friendship they form really helped him come out of his shell and become more confident in himself.
I will always eat up a high society setting in Victorian London with a string of murders storyline so this was a lot of fun for me! I don't know how much I would have loved it if I read it physically, but the audiobook was a great time! I also loved that Muriel never let anyone try and change her, or try to stop her from living the life she wanted to and the ending of this book made it all the more satisfying! Unlike many other female characters, she did not simply forgive Henry and take him back after everything and I loved that! She knew her own worth and didn't want to go through the heartbreak once again and chose herself! She was truly an icon and a character I still think about to this day ⋆˙⟡”

“This was an interesting concept, I just wish more had been made of it and there was more depth. It felt a bit flat at times and took me a while to get through 😕”

“Jekyll and Hyde: Consulting Detectives is the first novel in a new series by Tim Major that takes the characters of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novella and spins it in a new direction.
Muriel Carew, Henry Jekyll’s ex-fiancée, teams up with her old flame to uncover the truth on people missing all across the city. But when bodies start turning up, is the murderer part of society’s elite or could it be the mysterious Edward Hyde that haunts her dreams that is committing these crimes?
A really cool concept for a novel that could have done a bit more. The mystery was interesting enough, but it leaped around a bit at times. Also, to move the story along, characters came to grips with plot points a little too conveniently. Character development was lightning fast and could have used a bit more time to coalesce. An understanding of the classic novella serves as best background you can get, although the characters are slightly different than that book.
Overall, I enjoyed the novel and it was a quick read. I just wish it had a bit more substance to it. The second book in the series comes out in October and I will still check it out with the hopes that it expands on some of the ideas introduced in this novel.
If you like mystery novels with a classic twist, you will probably enjoy this book. Parents, some adult situations occur and there is some gruesome scenes but nothing that is super over the top. Very little language also means that it can be enjoyed by teenagers and up.
Happy Reading Everyone!”
