“I randomly picked this book up from the young adult’s section of the library for a library classification system project I had for school. I was so pleasantly surprised to find such a captivating story inside!!
I’ve seen reviews describe this as “Hogwarts but with murder” and I definitely see where that came from, but I think it’s so much more. This is a story of revenge, yes, but it also includes so much internal struggle that comes with questioning what you know as you find yourself. This book also has a diverse group of characters including people from many different lands, with different skin colors and who speak different languages. The main character is bisexual and had a non-binary close ally. It was unbelievably refreshing to see these and other people represented and recognized as completely normal.
The switch back and forth between timelines isn’t my favorite (but that’s just a personal preference - it was done well here), and sometimes the behaviors of the characters weren’t entirely believable (even in a world of suspended reality), but I really liked this story and would read the sequel if we were given one!!!”
