““Reality will take shape in the memory alone…” Imagine a warm summer day, you are sitting after a day at the beach, listening to a relative of yours telling you stories of his life while you are having drinks after dinner. That’s what reading this book felt like. Calm, slow-paced, and nostalgic. Proust explores human relationships with absolute mastery that by the end of the book, every character feels familiar, like a relative you spend your summer with. We follow our narrator who is a sensitive young boy who does not like to go to sleep. He feels connections with the things surrounding him. The objects within his room at Combray become a part of his mind. Through his lens, we meet his family who are a colourful host of characters, especially his grandmother, and we follow as they interact with their acquaintances and with Mr. Swann who is an illustrious family friend who comes to visit them often for dinner. Memory plays a very central role in this book. It guides the narrative forward and the different fragments of this story are interwoven together through the recollections of our narrator’s childhood. The “Swann in love” part was my absolute favourite part of the story. Getting to watch people fall in love, their trials and tribulations, the jealousy, and the vulnerability are all aspects of what makes this part the most special part of this book. Swann and Odette’s love story is a brilliant exploration of infatuation and how it can sweep you up completely, and the difference between intrigue and love. Proust’s writing was the crown jewel of the book. So beautiful, I reread some parts because I enjoyed them that much. The way the characters were described made me fall in love with them, especially the grandmother. His writing felt like a cool breeze brushing against your skin on the beach. A quiet classic that will stay with me even though that at some points felt like a wave washing over me, lovely when it flows but forgettable when it ebbs. But as time goes on, parts of it keep flowing in my brain and give me the nostalgic feeling.”
