Impossible Music
ByPublisher Description
Music is Simon's life—which is why he is devastated when a stroke destroys his hearing. He resists attempts to help him adjust to his new state, refusing to be counseled, refusing to learn sign-language, refusing to have anything to do with Deaf culture. Refusing, that is, until he meets G, a tough-as-nails girl dealing with her own newly-experienced deafness.
In an emotionally engaging tale crackling with originality, Simon's quest to create an entirely new form of music forces him into a deeper understanding of his relationship to the hearing world, of himself, and of the girl he meets along the way.

It wasn’t terrible, but I just couldn’t read anymore. I don’t care enough. The plot is interesting, but I genuinely don’t care about Simon enough to follow his train of thought. I don’t like him and G together. I just think the romance is unnecessary. I feel like they seem like freshmen who want to be seen as older but are 18 so they can have the freedom an adult would have in the story.
The writing itself was pretty good. I like the metaphors, and the descriptions were my cup of tea. But I did not connect with the structure. Everything is in past tense, so that makes it more detached. And then the way Simon tells his story makes it feel even more detached, so that’s why it’s hard for me to care. I wish it was chronological or that the chapters didn’t begin with facts and just started with the story. I understand though that it would be difficult like that since the author is not deaf, so he can’t write in-depth about what it would be like to lose your hearing in this manner.
I like that it tackles Simon struggling with coming to terms with the present as well as his family’s struggles. I want it to solely focus on that instead of the romance. I also just don’t like Simon when it comes to him interacting with others, especially romantically, cause Simon just uses them and is pretty selfish, even before he lost his hearing.”
