Publisher Description

“Carrie Fountain’s YA novel is part-plot-twisty thriller, part-sweet romance, and perfect for summer reading!” —Bustle, Best YA Book of July, on I'm Not Missing

It’s senior year, and Miranda Black’s best friend, Syd, has run away—suddenly and inexplicably, leaving behind nothing but a pink leopard print cell phone with a text message from the mysterious HIM. Everyone wants to know why Syd left, but the truth is, Miranda has no idea. When Miranda’s mother abandoned her as a child, Miranda had found shelter in her friendship with Syd, who wore her own motherlessness like a badge of honor.

Now Miranda’s been left behind again, left to untangle the questions of why Syd left, where she is—and if she’s even a friend worth saving, all while stumbling into first love with the most unlikely boy in school. How do you take on the future when it feels like so much of your past wasn’t even real?

“I feel like this book could’ve been finished right at the halfway point. It seemed to have the plot and everything over with. I finished and literally it felt like it could’ve been shorter”
“I started off loving this book! The plot was there, the writing was enticing… but half way through it felt like it was over and I thought “how am I still only halfway through? What else could possibly happen?” Honestly not much. Felt like the author had a great idea, but didn’t know how to finish the story. The first half was great! But the second half felt forced and boring. Anticlimactic.”
“This novel was a compelling choice for me because it sounded like something my students would really like, and after reading it, I think that I was probably right. They would most likely really like it. Miranda (motivated and motherless senior in high school) is a narrator with a realistic voice, and her motivations are understandable and seem really authentic throughout. Miranda’s character thoroughly explores the feelings of a teenager with an absent parent, “I didn’t just miss having a mother in general. I missed having mine. The one who was not standing there in front of me in this moment. The one who’d driven away one morning while I was at school, taking the universe with her.” As you can see, Miranda eloquently conveys her feelings in a way that allows the reader to really grasp them. Although I like this book, and I think my students would like it too, I can’t offer it in my classroom. To avoid spoilers, I’ll just say that Miranda makes some choices that would maybe be ok if she had considered all the factors, but she didn’t. Therefore, I just don’t feel right about offering this title to freshmen. This novel would be best for juniors or seniors in high school. Or for younger students in a literature circle in which there was a teacher available to lend insight into some of the choices.”
