In 1920 wordt een Duits meisje opgenomen in een Utrechts gezin om aan te sterken. Ze blijft contact houden met haar pleegouders en trouwt in 1929 met hun jongste zoon. Tussen 1920 en 1949 houdt zij grotendeels per brief contact met haar familie en vriendinnen in Duitsland, die in de jaren dertig bijna allen aanhangers worden van Hitler en de Nazi-ideologie. Hoewel zij en haar man tegenstanders van het Nazi-regime zijn en in de Tweede Wereldoorlog verzetswerk doen, blijft de relatie tussen haar en haar familie hartelijk. Hedda Kalshoven-Brester, oudste dochter van de hoofdpersoon, heeft deze briefwisseling voortreffelijk bezorgd en ingeleid. Doordat zij alleen relevante brieven en fragmenten opnam heeft deze correspondentie grote zeggingskracht.
