I Don't Care

By Ágota Kristóf & Chris Andrews
I Don't Care by Ágota Kristóf & Chris Andrews digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

Never before translated short stories—“stark and haunting” (San Francisco Chronicle)—by the legendary genius Ágota Kristóf

Here, in English at last, is a collection of Ágota Kristóf’s short—sometimes very short—stories, which she selected herself, translated by the peerless Chris Andrews. Written immediately before her masterful trilogy (The Notebook, The Proof, The Third Lie), Kristof’s short fictions oscillate between parable, surrealist anecdotes, and stories animated by a realism stripped to the bone, often returning to the theme of exile: the twin impossibilities of returning home and of reconstructing home elsewhere.

The world of the book has very hard edges: cruelty is almost omnipresent, peace and consolation are scarce. Austere and minimalist, but with a poetic force that shifts the walls in the reader’s mind, Kristof’s penetrating short fictions make for extraordinary and essential reading.

I Don't Care Reviews

“I've wanted to read Kristóf's hailed Notebook Trilogy for a little while now, but I can't find it in any libraries in my county, or in any bookshops. I've settled with this Penguin International Writers publication of short stories (though flash fiction would be a better representation: the longest story is about 4 pages long and some are a single paragraph long). A short review of this might well read "I Don't Care"; the stories, as short as they are, felt like little snatches of nothingness. Some of them were a little moody or edgy, but generally I read one, forgot it, and moved onto the next. So not the best place to start to be wowed by Kristóf (I'm still holding out that the Notebook Trilogy will be as good as everyone says it is). Example of a story. This is the entirety of the "The Child": They sit there, at a table on a café terrace. They watch the people passing by. People pass, as usual, as anyone might, or must, they pass. People like taking turns to pass by. Me, I dawdle and drag along after them. I rage, I stop, I spit, I cry, then I sit on the curb and stick my tongue out at all the people passing by. —You're rude, say the passersby. —Yes, we're ashamed of you, say my parents. I'm ashamed of them too. They didn't buy me the rifle, the nice rifle I wanted. They said: —It's not a nice toy. But I saw my father going off to his military service. He had a rifle, a real one, for killing. And when I saw nice rifles for children, Indian rifles, for hunting, for playing, they said they were nasty toys, and they bought me a spinning top! Here I am, sitting on the curb. I get up, I rage, I cry, I spit, I shout. —You're rude, I'm ashamed of you: you tell lies, you pretend to be kind! When I grow up, I'm going to kill you!”
