It amazes me that the mind of a teenage girl a century ago, is the same as the mind of a teenage girl today. I found echoes of my own diaries in Cassandra’s thoughts and theories - despite my life not being nearly as whimsical as her’s.
While the writing is beautifully messy - as is the mind of a teenage girl - it’s really the charming characters that makes this book so enjoyable. From drinking port in your underwear and melodramatically leaning against walls at the horrifying realisation that you are in love, to trapping your father in the dungeon just so he can start writing his novel, Cassandra is not only the ‘teller’ of the story, but also the heart.
