Hunter

By Ross Greenwood
Hunter by Ross Greenwood digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

'Ross Greenwood doesn’t write clichés. What he has written here is a fast-paced, action-filled puzzle with believable characters that's spiced with a lot of humour' Kath Middleton

There’s a killer on the streets, and no one is safe…

First there was the drowned man, but maybe his death was an accident?

Then there were the decapitated bodies, the burnt girl, the women pursued in the dark. Finally the police have to admit there’s a serial killer on the loose and he seems set on revenge. His name is Abel and his crimes are escalating every day.

Dan Flood, Olivia Jones and their two young children are a family at breaking point. The mundane juggle of parenting and work means that the romance is draining away. Living in a community that is growing ever more fearful, just adds to the pressure in their lives.

But when Abel turns his attention on Olivia, only Dan can save her…

Bestseller Ross Greenwood’s serial killer thriller is perfect for fans of Mark Billingham, Ian Rankin and Peter Robinson.

Praise for Ross Greenwood:

'Move over Rebus and Morse; a new entry has joined the list of great crime investigators in the form of Detective Inspector John Barton. A rich cast of characters and an explosive plot kept me turning the pages until the final dramatic twist' Richard Burke

“The story: When Abel was a child, his mother called it ‘the sickness’. Now an adult, Abel is reaping his own dark punishments on the city of London. Dan and Olivia are struggling in their relationship. Dan is miserable in a city he hates and a soulless job that’s sapping the life from him. Olivia is exhausted and fed up with being responsible for every adult decision in their lives. But when Abel sets his sights on Olivia, Dan may be the only one who can protect his family… My thoughts: I’ve read several books in both Ross Greenwood’s DI Barton and Norfolk Murders series, which I’ve really enjoyed (and in fact, I’m taking part in the blog tour for the latest Norfolk Murders book, “Death at Horsey Mere” in March!). But this is the first of his standalone novels I’ve read, so I was interested to see how it compared. Something I’ve enjoyed in previous books by Greenwood is the story being told from multiple characters’ perspectives, and I was pleased to see that again here. Although we mainly hear from struggling couple Dan and Olivia, we also see flashes of the story from several of Abel’s victims, and even Abel himself, which really adds to the menace as this terrifying serial killer stalks the city. This is definitely a dark thriller, but there’s also humour, and I really enjoyed getting to know the various characters and felt invested not only in Abel’s escalating crimes but also the deteriorating (but possibly salvageable?) relationship of Dan and Olivia. The story builds to a dramatic conclusion and the story kept me gripped all the way through. If you like your crimes less cosy, this is definitely one to try!”
“It's painfully obvious that Greenwood is not for me. This was not a thriller or mystery, it's a more domestic sink realism (as we say in Swedish...). No more Greenwood for a while, or probably never.”
“A different kind of thriller with maybe more emphasis on the relationships of the main characters than on the actual crimes. Some unexpected twists. Well written and with great narration.”
