“This book consists of a Novella and a handful of stories. The titular Novella is about a man’s obsession that turns to projection onto his child and the abuse and neglect of everyone in the family that arises out of this. Often subtle, it’s affects are far-reaching, and it’s painful to watch the daughters ache to be loved as the parents struggle to really see them. “How long must we wait to outlast sorrow?“
I enjoyed all of the following stories, but not as much as the Novella. “Water Names” was pretty in its style, but there wasn’t a lot to it. “San” was very interesting. “The Unforgettable” was about immigrant experience. “The Eve of the Spirit Festival” had more of the same, cohesive themes as the rest of the collection. And “Pippa’s Story” was my favorite, a mystical and kind of witchy feeling story about a daughter, leaving her impoverished home to take a job in the city.
I really like this author’s writing and the whole collection feels like generational divide and how it’s exacerbated by all aspects of the immigrant experience. There’s such sorrow in it. Haunting feels like an app descriptor… Sometimes literally and other times metaphorically.”
“Good, but it didn’t really stand out to me. Most of the stories were too similar and one note and after a bit the family dynamics just seemed repetitive.”
