How to Cheat Your Own Death

By Kristen Perrin
How to Cheat Your Own Death by Kristen Perrin digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

From the gritty streets of 1960s Soho to the lofty galleries of present-day West London, two interlocking mysteries decades apart unfold in this latest instalment in the award-winning, New York Times bestselling Castle Knoll Murder Mystery series

Some secrets are deadlier than others

1968: Frances Adams is loving her new London life, and she’s stepped into a world of glamour thanks to her new friend, Vera Huntington--a magnetic socialite as mysterious as she is provocative. Vera dances around London like she owns it, taking Frances with her.

Present day: When Annie Adams heads to London to visit her famous artist mother, Laura, the last thing she expects to find is a dead body. Least of all for it to be Laura’s new protégée, left in an alley with her heart surgically removed from her chest.

Annie is no stranger to murder--after all, she’s solved a few already. And something about this case feels familiar. She’s read about one just like it in the journals of her late great aunt Frances, whose friend Vera was killed in the 1960s in the exact same way.

As Annie investigates, threats pile up on Laura’s doorstep, and it soon becomes clear that she’s next. With her mother’s life on the line, can Annie find the killer before it’s too late?

How to Cheat Your Own Death Reviews

4.0
“This has one of my favorite cozy mystery series. The back and forth between Annie, in the present, and her aunt Frances, in the 60s, via journals is such a fun twist. I love how my thoughts on Frances and feelings towards the characters of 1960s Castle Knoll keep evolving as we learn more about what drove them to their actions. An excellent mix of mystery and mayhem with the perfect dash of romantic tension.”
“I was provided an ARC by NetGalley in exchange for honest review. This is the best in the series thus far, in my opinion. I feel like Perrin's writing improves with each installment. Occasionally, the dialogue is slightly unnatural feeling, but otherwise, I feel like it felt more seamless than the first two. I was wondering where Annie and Crane's sleuthing would take them next, and this was unexpected, yet totally plausible. Worth a try if you weren't in love with the first two!”
“4 stars - Now this is a whodunnit! Every chapter delivers twists and turns, and just when you think you've got your footing… swoosh…the rug gets pulled out from under you. It's really easy to get immersed in the dual POVs without any trouble deciphering between Frances’ diaries and Annie’s sleuthing (thank you, italics!). The medium pace keeps you guessing and anxious right up until the last 20%, where it shifts into a fast-paced thrill ride that has you on the edge of your seat while revealing its final secrets. I haven’t yet read the other books in the series, but I’ll now be circling back to those as well. Thank you, NetGalley and Dutton, for sending me this ARC in exchange for an honest review.”
Surprised Face with Open Mouth“Absolutely LOVED! I was on the edge of my seat the whole book, but especially the last few chapters. This might be my favourite of the series? I really loved the parallels between Annie in the current timeline and France’s in 1968 and how their investigations crossed over and revealed answers slowly to us as Annie is finding out what happened. This is done well in all three books but feels especially prevalent in this one, also because of both Crane and Ford being with each of them and being their rocks, provided some really beautiful symmetry over timelines. We also got to learn a bit more about characters from previous books which is always amazing, as well as an unexpected appearance from Annie’s father that unfolds in their investigations as well. Making for some unique and unexpected plots that all tie in with each other. The ending though… I already need more, please and thank you!!”
