Horseman

By Christina Henry
Horseman by Christina Henry digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

In this atmospheric, terrifying novel that draws strongly from "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," the author of Alice and The Girl in Red works her trademark magic, spinning an engaging and frightening new story from a classic tale.

Everyone in Sleepy Hollow knows about the Horseman, but no one really believes in him. Not even Ben Van Brunt's grandfather, Brom Bones, who was there when it was said the Horseman chased the upstart Crane out of town. Brom says that's just legend, the village gossips talking.

More than thirty years after those storied events, the village is a quiet place. Fourteen-year-old Ben loves to play "Sleepy Hollow boys," reenacting the events Brom once lived through. But then Ben and a friend stumble across the headless body of a child in the woods near the village, and the discovery makes Ben question everything the adults in Sleepy Hollow have ever said. Could the Horseman be real after all? Or does something even more sinister stalk the woods?

“Dnfed on page 104. At first I was happy about the revelation that the narrator is a trans boy because representation is important. But the more I read, the more confused I became. Because this emphasis on 'I am not a girl' and the constant repetitions eventually sounded more like the usual 'I am not like other girls' to me rather than an authentic transgender character. I was also confused by the narrator's age. Many of his actions suggested to me that he was a child under the age of 12. Then again he was suddenly very cautious and thoughtfull, more like someone older than 25. Then he was on full mode teenager again. Linguistically I also found the book way too modern for the time in which it is supposed to be set. Phrases from our today's language usage are used, for example, 'don't give a fuck' is simply replaced with 'don't give a fig'. Very irritating. His repeated adoration of his grandfather also became unbearable. Especially since he was portrayed as the stereotypical wild hero, while his wife had to take on the role of the stereotypical old shrew. All of this together was so exhausting that I don't even want to know how it ends.”
