Horizon
By Scott WesterfeldPublisher Description
A race for survival from the #1 New York Times–bestselling author of Uglies: “The fast-paced action and mystery . . . should keep readers glued to this book.” —Publishers Weekly
This harrowing tale of supernatural suspense kicks off a new series from the visionary mind of #1 New York Times–bestselling author Scott Westerfeld.
When a plane crash-lands in the Arctic, eight young survivors step from the wreckage expecting to see nothing but ice and snow. Instead they find themselves lost in a strange jungle with no way to get home and little hope of rescue.
Food is running out. Water is scarce. And the jungle is full of threats unlike anything the survivors have ever seen before—from razor-beaked shredder birds to carnivorous vines and much, much worse. With danger at every turn, these eight kids must learn to work together to survive. But cliques and rivalries threaten to tear them apart. And not everyone will make it out of the jungle alive.
BONUS! In the Horizon multi-platform experience, you’re not just reading about the castaways, you’re one of them. Join the race for survival in the FREE game, available on your browser and as an app.

“I forgot once again that I've read this one. This time it's not an e-arc.
Been wanting to read this for a while and this series MIGHT act as a buffer to all the grimdark or epic fantasies and hard sci-fi I've been reading. My original review is a little bit too harsh especially for a Lost-esque, mystery box series made for children. I took a loooong break during this book (and honestly didn't care that much on the latter half, just wanted to finish this one). I honestly might NOT continue this series once again.
Wanted to read this just to finish the "multi-platform" series published by Scholastic and written by multiple authors, which includes https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2921082.The_Maze_of_Bones__The_39_Clues___1_ (read every book until the last one, stll missing 2 books on the fourth series), Infinity Ring (read and owned), and Spirit Animals (only read the first series). This one intrigued me because of the sci-fi mystery.
Honestly so far it's quite good, some humor and science things here and there with some scary stuffs, too. It's a decent introduction to the "mystery box" genre for children, especially since there's a surge of mystery box shows lately, though not really for kids.

Original review: (2017 January 23)
Rating: 2 stars
received an arc from edelweiss . . .
This is just cliché, I mean the first events talks about a plane crash (the foreshadowing, if you wanted to call it that) . . . and the characters is the usual kids, the samurai-wielding one, the leader, the science geek, the two non-English speakers, the not trusting-I-must-be-the-leader one . . . so enough of those ones and twos.
This reminds me of Cage of Eden - which is a manga NOT SUITABLE for children.
So the kids are stranded in an unknown place - is it Earth? or another planet? are they abducted by aliens? And a strange device appears that could change something - like gravity - in whatever place they are . . . and weird plants and animals, of course.
And lastly, it seems that they are already found out (or somehow) where they are and were going somewhere already (but in the span of seven books until they get rescued? or something. . .). I hope this series won't be that draggy. (maybe after finding out where they are . . . they would battle whatever or whoever put them there in order for them to go back to Earth?) AND HOPEFULLY THERE WON'T BE A MOLE/SPY or whatever in the group - I mean 39 Clues, Spirit Animals, and Tombquest had a character like that.”
