Honor by Elif Shafak digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

An honor killing shatters and transforms the lives of Turkish immigrants in 1970s London in this novel from the author of The Island of Missing Trees (a Reese's Book Club pick)

Internationally bestselling Turkish author Elif Shafak’s new novel is a dramatic tale of families, love, and misunderstandings that follows the destinies of twin sisters born in a Kurdish village. While Jamila stays to become a midwife, Pembe follows her Turkish husband, Adem, to London, where they hope to make new lives for themselves and their children.

In London, they face a choice: stay loyal to the old traditions or try their best to fit in. After Adem abandons his family, Iskender, the eldest son, must step in and become the one who will not let any shame come to the family name.  And when Pembe begins a chaste affair with a man named Elias, Iskender will discover that you could love someone with all your heart and yet be ready to hurt them.

Just published to great acclaim in England, Honor is a powerful, gripping exploration of guilt and innocence, loyalty and betrayal, and the trials of the immigrant, as well as the love and heartbreak that too often tear families apart.

Slightly Smiling Face“I have never been as captivated by an author as I am by Elif Shafak. This book drew me in so deeply that I only needed three reading sessions to finish 70% of the story and on the third day, within just two hours. I have always been mesmerized by Shafak’s mastery of language and her ability to choose the perfect words to describe an event, a situation, or the emotions tied to them. Her storytelling keeps me engaged, fully immersed in the world she creates. However, Honour is, without a doubt, an incredibly depressing novel. There is little to no happiness throughout the book, which left me feeling emotionally drained. Love, which often serves as a character’s driving force, is almost absent, making it difficult to find hope within the narrative. Instead, Shafak layers the story with even more drama and complexity, which eventually led me to “guess it right” the next several events before they unfolded. It became a habit to think: “I bet, something bad is going to happen (again!)” That said, I will always admire Elif Shafak’s writing. Period.”
“Tough subject, interesting story from different perspectives but I just didn't really connect with this book. I found the twins twist at the end unnecessary and it made the story more confusing. I didn't like the way each character had their own chapters, but letters from Iskander would just pop randomly in other chapters. Similarly, I didn't like the change of narrative styles with only one character being written first person, while this character actually didn't play a big role in the story. Still, it remains an easy read and I really liked the beginning of the story and the ways it makes you travel to remote places and foreign cultures.”
