Publisher Description

"Home Front is Hannah's crowning achievement."—The Huffington Post

In this powerhouse of a novel, Kristin Hannah explores the intimate landscape of a troubled marriage with this provocative and timely portrait of a husband and wife, in love and at war.

All marriages have a breaking point. All families have wounds. All wars have a cost. . . .

Like many couples, Michael and Jolene Zarkades have to face the pressures of everyday life—children, careers, bills, chores—even as their twelve-year marriage is falling apart. Then a deployment sends Jolene deep into harm's way and leaves defense attorney Michael at home, unaccustomed to being a single parent to their two girls. As a mother, it agonizes Jolene to leave her family, but as a solider, she has always understood the true meaning of duty. In her letters home, she paints a rose-colored version of her life on the front lines, shielding her family from the truth. But war will change Jolene in ways that none of them could have foreseen. When tragedy strikes, Michael must face his darkest fear and fight a battle of his own—for everything that matters to his family.

At once a profoundly honest look at modern marriage and a dramatic exploration of the toll war takes on an ordinary American family, Home Front is a story of love, loss, heroism, honor, and ultimately, hope.

"Hannah has written a remarkable tale of duty, love, strength, and hope that is at times poignant and always thoroughly captivating and relevant." —Library Journal (starred review)

Loudly Crying Face“I did enjoy the book but Jolene’s stubborn-ness did frustrate me when it came to Michael. I thought a bit more would happen in the book but I did enjoy seeing Jolene’s recovery and knowing she and her family would be ok in the end. Great writing as always from Kristin!”
Loudly Crying Face“My first Kristin Hannah book and it did not disappoint! I love everything about it.”
“Kristin Hannah delivers an emotional, heart-wrenching story in Home Front that dives deep into themes of family, love, sacrifice, and resilience. It’s one of those books that grabs your heart early on and doesn’t let go until the final chapter. The story follows Jolene, a helicopter pilot and mom, whose life gets flipped upside down when she’s deployed to Iraq. Back home, her husband Michael—a workaholic attorney—and their two daughters are left struggling with her absence. The emotional tension between Jolene and Michael, especially after a significant argument before she leaves, is so raw and relatable. When Jolene returns from deployment, the story shifts to focus on PTSD, healing, and whether love can survive life’s toughest battles. What I loved most was how authentic the characters felt. Jolene is incredibly strong but also vulnerable, which makes her so relatable. Michael’s character development felt real, too—watching him come to terms with his shortcomings as a husband and father was frustrating at first but ultimately satisfying. The kids were written with the kind of honesty that makes you root for the whole family. The pacing was solid, with just enough action during the war scenes to keep you hooked while balancing the emotional depth of the story back home. Some of the twists were predictable, but that didn’t take away from the emotional weight of the book. If anything, it gave me a chance to brace myself for the gut punches! As for the ending—without giving spoilers—it’s bittersweet and heartfelt. It felt true to the story and left me with that lingering "wow, I need a moment" feeling. Final Thoughts: If you’re looking for an emotional rollercoaster that explores family dynamics and the struggles of military life, this one’s for you. Kristin Hannah’s writing is vivid, heartfelt, and deeply empathetic. Keep tissues handy, though—you’ll need them!”
Loudly Crying Face“I love Kristin Hannah and her writing style and I really didn’t want to put this book down. But…the main characters in this book were really unlikable in my opinion. I kept rooting for them, but they were so self sabotaging, stubborn, and selfish, that it made it almost impossible.”
