Publisher Description

A car accident shattered sixteen-year-old Morgan's family. Now her brother's dead, her mom's paralyzed in more ways than one, her dad lives at work and her seven-year-old sister Amy tries too freaking hard to salvage everything. What's more, high school is its own special kind of hell, where her ex-boyfriend delights in spreading rumors that shred her reputation and make her feel like a loser.

When she finds an old camera in a creepy abandoned hospital, it seems like her luck is finally changing. And it is changing--from bad to worse. Because of course it is. Each time Morgan photographs one of her classmates they become corrupted versions of themselves. It's like the camera steals their goodness, their essence, and leaves them hollow.

Then her sister uses the camera to take a selfie.

No matter what the cost, Morgan will find a way to reverse the effects of the cursed camera and save Amy, before her already-fractured family completely self-destructs.

“A big thank you to Tyche Books Ltd and Netgalley for a copy of this ARC in exchange for my honest review. Trigger warnings - sexual assault, loss of a loved one. I was first drawn to this book because of the eerie yet minimal cover, which sucked me in straight away. After reading the blurb I was intrigued. I am not a big horror fan but I really loved this book. Even being a YA horror it did not read like a typical YA story but it didn't feel overly adult either. As a Psychological Thriller Hollow is not overly violent or gory but it really does suck you in. We follow 16 year old Morgan, your typical High School student going through a pretty rough home life. We learn very early on that Morgan’s Brother Aric was killed in a car crash and her Mother is now disabled leaving her bound to a wheelchair. Morgan is the responsible for caring for her Sister, Amy. Morgan’s school life isn't much better. With Sevren, her best friend and a toxic ex-boyfriend, Keith intent on making he life a misery and spreading vicious rumours about her, poor Morgan doesn't have it easy. During one of Morgan’s daily runs, she finds herself in the notorious, abandoned and supposedly haunted hospital. She makes her way to the former psych ward where she comes across an old antique camera. Unbeknown to Morgan however this is no ordinary antique camera. This camera has the ability to suck the goodness out of people. Prior to knowing this Morgan snaps a shot of a few classmates and her sister uses it to take a selfie. Then the drama really begins. We follow along as Morgan faces her biggest fears in order to restore all the people the camera has made hollow. Thi was definitely a page turner and I loved it. I think this book would really resonate with a lot of today's young adults. It deals with topics many of them face on a daily basis. School is a hard place for some kids and others don't have great home lives either. This book was fast paced and super easy to get through. I think I finished it in 2 days and the characters are just so easy to gel with. I found Rhonda Parrish's writing style easy to get on with and honestly I was sucked in straight away. I felt quite disappointed when it ended and did want to read more. Definitely recommend this books for fans of YA horror fiction.”
“First thing first, I would like to take a second to thank Netgalley for allowing me a copy of this book for review. This book had so much potential. I read this up to the 50% mark and was so invested in the story that after the horrendous plot twist I just wanted it to end. If I try to even attempt to explain what this book is about, I would fail miserly. I thought this was going to be about a girl who went through some tragedies and finally finds herself. However, this was so confusing. I don't understand how it went from hard-hitting to paranormal in a sense. Very. VERY. CONFUSED.”
“This book was an extremely solid YA horror! I found the descriptions to be vivid and real, and the characters to be relatable and raw. This was a quick read but I found the themes to be poignant. Hollow tells a very real tale about loss, healing, grief, and guilt. This story follows Morgan, a teen dealing with bullying by her horrid ex-boyfriend, who finds an old camera in the abandoned asylum in her neighborhood. This camera takes the goodness out of people whose pictures are taken by the camera, leaving them to be cold, hollow beings. I sometimes have a hard time relating to teen protagonists and find a lot of them in YA to be very cringey, but Morgan was likeable and I found her stress and conflicts understandable. She had a clear personality and wasn't bland, which is another issue I have with YA protagonists. I liked that she had a male best friend who doesn't become the love interest in the end, and that she had a sense of humor. She is very easy to sympathize with. There were some great, important things that Morgan learned about her circumstances that were empowering to read, which I appreciated. The only thing that docked this book a star for me was the ending. It was too quick. I wish more got resolved. Quite a few people she cared about had their picture taken by this camera, several having pretty prominent roles in the story or at least to Morgan, and yet they were not brought back after she essentially saved them to see how they were doing. It left me wanting to know how they were doing because they were built up as being somewhat important yet they were dropped like hot tamales that didn't matter. Otherwise this was a great book, a solid read, and would definitely recommend it!”
