HIM by Geoff Ryman digital book - Fable

Publisher Description

The long-awaited new book from multi-award winner Geoff Ryman

An extraordinary science-fiction novel about identity, divinity and alternate reality – the story of the son of God.

“Women, of course, can not be sons of God,”

In the village of Nazareth, virgin Maryam and the wife of Yosef barLevi gives birth to a miracle: a little girl. She is named Avigayil, after her grandmother.

But as Avigayil grows, it’s clear she believes that she is destined to be someone greater than just the daughter of Maryam. From leading a gang of village boys to challenging the priests in the temple, Avigayil is determined to find her way as Yeshu, a man.

Yeshu can work miracles.  He can see futures.  He can speak for God.
A gripping, thoughtful sci-fi novel, tackling family, the multiverse and the survival of love through immense change and crisis.

HIM Reviews

3.5
“This is a rewarding, albeit difficult read. A marvelous and raw exploration of growing up, not just Trans, but also as God. A heart breaking account of what happens when a mother is not accepting of this reality, at least not immediately. A grounded exploration of a likeable cult leader. Ryman, who is more famous for sword and sorcery paperbacks, made this all work. He really stuck the landing in the last twenty pages, securing my five stars. The lyrical novel "Dayspring" really sucked up most of the oxygen for queer tellings of the life of Christ, and for good reason. It's fantastic. However, reading isn't a competition and this book should be on the shelf of every LGBTQ+ Jesus freak. Let's rip off the band-aid of what didn't work here. It simply wasn't proof-read well. There are more than a few glaring mechanical errors that should have been caught before this was sent to print, and at least one stylistic choice that the author should've been talked out of (halfway through characters start talking in English vernaculars from around the Commonwealth and it's very clumsy).”
